First Official Mixtape

So, after a whole month of being out of the deejay academy, my mixtape is finally done! And let me tell you, it aint easy making a mixtape. For one, it has to have little to no errors at all, it has to have appeal to its listeners in that one can listen to it over and over again. Also the genre of music one uses in the mixtape is also an important point. I decided to go with a mixed blend of Trance, House, African Dance and Hype Music. I was aiming to make a mixtape that just gets someone in the mood for a wild night of partying, hence i named it "the ultimate party-rock mixtape" Question is, did i nail it? Did i pull it off? Is my mixtape up to the standards that people have been expecting?  Only one way to find out. Download the mixes at ReverbNation and Mixcrate. The links are on the sidebar of this blog or you can join "Tomiso The Deejay" group on Facebook where ill be posting the links to where you can download it. Tell me what you think

Changing Tastes In Music

So i've just done my 1st part of deejay exams "The Theory Behind Deejaying". Basically we were tested on our knowledge on the equipment, procedures, types of deejays and so on. My final exam will be practical, to test my skills on the decks. fingers crossed!

Anyway, Ive noticed that time is flying and soon I'm gonna be certified as a deejay, I'm gonna have to drop a really good mix-tape and quite frankly, its eating my head. What genre of music will i make my mix-tape from? These days, the peoples taste in music has changed a lot. About 5 years ago, you went to a club and all you'd hear was crunk music. A few years after that came the ragga mania as all people listened to was ragga and dance hall. A year ago, rid-dims came into the limelight and took over and has been hitting since then.

Now, there is a new trend. . . . .trance music! It has been the biggest hit in Kenya ever! The trance, house, progressive, minimal and dub-step music sensation is at its peakest at the moment as most clubs play that genre of music half the night! And also most guest deejays coming to Kenya specialize in it

So now you see, i have to decide on what genre or combination of genres of music my first official mix-tape will consist of since it will set a path of how my life as a deejay will rise from there. I could really use some advice or suggestions so, hit me up on facebook or twitter and let me know

>> mixtape of the week is definitely SUMMERSLAM E.D.M PARTY MIX by the Show-Stopper Dj Mista Dru. Download it at http://www.mixcrate.com/mix/62486/Dj-Mista-DRU-SUMMERSLAM-EDM-PARTY-MIX it totally blew my mind <<

Cheers.

Branding

Time is moving fast! It feels like i just joined the academy yesterday and already im seeing the finish line in the vicinity! So for the past couple of weeks my mind has been occupied with thoughts on branding. You see, a deejay is not all about knowing the equipment, its also about image. Image includes what you call yourself, what you look like, how you act and how you carry yourself. One of the biggest challenge is coming up with a name for yourself. How good & catchy your name is will be the basis as to whether people will always remember your name or not.

So came my dilemma, what shall i call myself once i started my deejay career? I heard alot of suggestions from my pals and Google & well, i thought it would be best to stick to my nickname "TOMISO" I don't necessarily think its a requirement to have the 'DJ' part before ones brand name. I mean musicians don't call themselves "singer so and so" or "rapper so and so" its just single names like "jaguar" or "nonini" or "usher" "p-square" etc etc, so im just gonna go by what I've decided TOMISO THE DEEJAY, i think it sounds better than DEEJAY TOMISO don't you think? Anyhoo feel free to drop me name suggestions before i make it official, hats for this week. Stay tuned to see how im doing

knowing your music

Another week done at the deejay academy an i just cannot believe the progress im making! I pretty confident at the moment and i know i can do better, the only thing worrying is that i haven't yet mastered the art of scratching. Out tutor deejay touch does it so confidently and precisely, a true aster of his craft but when i tell him to teach us how, he tells us to be patient and perfect what we know first, music blending, so i guess thats what i gonna be doing. He also tells us to go listen to a lot of music so that we can "know" it. . .and it does make sense.

You see, to blend music perfectly, one has to listen to the beat, the flow and the speed. . .something called 'beats per minute'. If all these elements are equal and combined, it makes a good flow of transition from one song to another. A deejay needs to know these things off head, master all speeds of a song so that when one song is playing, he/she automatically plays another song in his head then on the decks. . . . sounds like rocket science doesn't it! Its a lot of work but hey, im in this for the long haul, #TEAMGOHARD!

The genesis of my journey

Ive always admired deejays. A person with the ability to keep people entertained all night is an ability that deserves applauding. My passion started when i was making dance mixes for my dance group. When i came to campus early last year, i got a deejay software on my PC called 'Virtual DJ' with which i started learning how to mix with the aid of my roomate Patrick. By mid march i had considered myself the "virtual king" coz everytime i started mixing up, my neighbours would come over and start dancing!

Here i am now, i just joined icanscratch deejay academy thanx to reference from Dj Mista Dru. 2 weeks down the line and honestly i love it! Deejaying isnt as easy as i thought it was but hey, its my passion. I'm under training by deejay touch, this guy got skills i tell you. Its one thing to know how to deejay but its another thing to know how to make a deejay out of someone. Teaching dj skills to an amateur is a major task but he makes it look like kindergarten math and for that, i got respect for him. Afshon Wallace, the C.E.O of the academy is also a good mentor. He knows how to support the students. Basically, i feel content. I'm studying the one thing i love and Ive cot passion for, I'm hoping ill make it through, thanx to the support from my family & friends. Stay tuned for more news on my on-goings and progress
